Julie interviewed Justin from Glitch Factor from St.Louis MO. for us, sometime in November 2006. Here it is:

Julie: First things first, Mac or PC?

Justin of Glitch Factor: We use both actually. Mac for recording music, PC for creating music.
That's due mostly to what software is available on which platform. I like them both equally, though.

Julie: Now that that's out of the way, we'd like to get a feel for who you are personally…could you give us a little peek into who you are?

Justin: ME huh? Well if we're just going off of "Justin" in the scope of the group……
First of all, I love music, obviously. Industrial is my primary love, but anything from Jazz to Classical, to Prog to Hard rock/classic rock…all kinds of stuff. I wouldn't consider myself a "punk rocker" or someone who hangs out at music clubs all the time. I'm very ecstatic with people I know, but not very outgoing otherwise. I'm extremely easy to get along with…I have no enemies. (I hope I'm going in the right direction with this.) I'm a huge procrastinator and hate that about myself. I'm very sarcastic, and some people have told me that I'm hard to read sometimes, but I don't think so at all. Things I'm into are audio, recording, computers, home theater, movies, toys (yes I collect toys, and that is my nerdiness showing), guitars, synths, and long walks on the beach (had to throw that one in). Oh, and I'd snowboard all the time if I lived in a place that I could.

Julie: When and how was Glitch Factor started? Who were the original band members and who are the current members today?

Justin: Glitch Factor was formed in 2001. It's sad because we haven't done a lot in all that time, but we've had a lot of rotating members. I guess we're like Nine Inch Nails in the way that Glitch Factor is basically ME. I write all the songs, play a lot of the instruments, and record it. Originally it was myself, Mike Hansen (DJ Cold Fusion) on keys, and Chris Sewell on vocals. Mike couldn't do it anymore, so Brian Anderson who played drums with me in my previous band (The Body Electric) joined. At the same time, I asked Brad to play bass and Greer Gezzey to sing. So, we went for a while with the lineup of Me, Chris, Brian, Brad, Greer, but didn't get beyond the practice/record phase. We went on a breakup/hiatus for a little while, because it wasn't working. I looked to do some other projects. I almost joined Paul before his latest reincarnation of Murder Happens, but I realized I REALLY wanted to play my own songs. So I started Glitch back up with Myself, Brain on keys, and Brad on bass again. Soon after, Jim Wolfe joined on as lead guitar. He was playing in a YES tribute band with Brian at the time. We practiced like that for a while and realized we needed a live drummer, so Jim told us about his friend Andy Marks. Sooooo……we finalized Glitch Factor with that setup. Justin - guitar, vox; Jim - guitar, Brian - synth; Brad - bass; Andy - drums. We played some shows with that lineup as the now OFFICIAL Glitch Factor. We were joined by Simone Riehl as a 2nd vocalist for a short time, but she left because of "musical differences" I guess. The jury is still out on that one. Oddly enough, the same day Simone quit, Andy did as well, so he could spend more time with his family. Since our drummer left, we had to rethink a few things. So THAT brings us to the CURRENT and hopefully final incarnation of Glitch Factor. Justin - guitar/vox; Jim - guitar/synth; Brad - bass; Brian - drums/synth. Wow, that was WAAAYYYYY too long of an answer.

Julie: Who's the goofball of the group?

Justin: That's difinately Brian…….he's got some kind of twisted sense of humor.

Julie: Glitch Factor's sound is so unique. How would you describe your music.

Justin: I like to say Electronic Rock. It's industrial, but more along the lines of early KMFDM in a "pop" sort of way. We mix a lot of sequenced AND live drums, lots of heavy guitar, and lots of synths. Some songs have female vocals in the recordings, but we put off looking for a replacement singer. Look for some interesting changes to come.

Julie: Who have been your biggest influences? (musically and non)

Justin: Kurt Cobain, was really my first BIG influence. Following the influences of THIS band's direction, it kind of started with 80's new wave, and stuff like Peter Gabriel and Genesis, later on, Information Society, KMFDM/NIN(big ones), Depeche Mode, Big Black, Ministry, Rob Zombie, Smashing Pumpkins…there's too many to mention, but those are the BIG ones, where we really grab our sound from (as far as my writing goes). Some more recent ones and some from other band members include, BT(huge), Dream Theater, Yes, Zappa, DJ Dieselboy, there is a pretty big list on our myspace page.

Non-Musical Influences? Midi and Distortion Pedals, plain and simple.

Julie: What message are you trying to get out there to your fans?

Justin: That's a tough one. I never really thought about that. I really make music because I enjoy doing it, and I enjoy the stuff that I write, and I just think that a lot of people that are into the type of stuff that I'm into will really enjoy it. I wouldn't say that we really have a "message" we're trying to get out besides…….."LISTEN TO OUR MUSIC" hahaha

Justin: If you were stranded on a desert island with only a laptop, which one piece of equipment would you bring, and why?

Justin: As far as music gear goes?? I would have to say my guitar. That's my primary instrument. I can always manipulate that and make crazy sounds with it. You can't get in your face distorted guitar sounds with a synth.

Julie: What are your personal favorite songs of your own, and why?

Justin: "Mean" always has a special place in my heart because it's one of the first songs that I wrote. It's evolved over time and in my opinion it still sounds good. Plus it's less industrial than the rest of them, so it can reach more people. Second, I would have to say "Sun" has always been one of my favorites. I just like the riffs. It's pretty raw.

Julie: What has been your most memorable live performance so far?

Justin: Well that's kind of a tie. We had a huge AWESOME crowd at the Blueberry Hill show with Murder Happens and (6). But playing with Slick Idiot at the Creepy Crawl was pretty freakin cool.

Julie: What are Glitch Factor's plan for the future? Can we be expecting a new album anytime soon?

Justin: Oh man…..this album should have been out a LONG time ago, but unfortunately I'm a perfectionist and things are NEVER done. Of course since I'm engineering it…I'm a firm believer of learning new things every day. Now the album sounds much better now as a result. We're shooting for an early 2007 release at this point. After that….doing some out of state shows is a big one.

Julie: So Justin, you are going to be producing the second Ghetto Electro Productions compilation, what can we be expecting out of that?

Justin: Yes, I'm really looking forward to getting everyone's submissions. The last one was great. Ken and his crew did an awesome job. Basically I'm getting song order in a fashion that flows, and doing mastering if and where needed. A compilation is definately about a feeling, and you need to make it so that you don't blow your load so to speak all at once and then put all the slow songs at the end. You need to keep people's interest from start to finish. That's where I come in.

Julie: What is the name of your studio? Tell us a bit about how that started and what types of things you do.

Justin: Well I don't really have a "studio" myself short of a room in the basement where I create my songs, but I work at a place called SmithLee Productions in Maplewood. SmithLee is one of the oldest studios in town. It's been around since 1979. I've worked here for almost 3 years. I'd really like to get some more Ghetto Electro bands in here and get past the "project studio" sound that plagues so many great artists. A lot of people get turned off from a good song by a sub par recording. I hate to say this, but the Ministry album Animositisomnia is one of my favorite Ministry albums, but it sounds so harsh that I have to turn it off after about 3 songs. Now obviously, this wasn't recorded in someone's bedroom, but it's a good example.

Julie: Is there anything else you'd like everyone to know?

Justin: BUY OUR ALBUM…oh wait you can't cause it's not out yet. Well in that case…..DON'T FORGET ABOUT US, it's coming ! And come to our shows. In fact come to everyone's shows because St.Louis music scene is dwindling. I don't see NEARLY the amount of people I used to at, say, a Full On Venus, Die Symphony, Radio Iodine, or Bellyfeel show. We hear this ALL the time, but support local music! Top 40 stuff is total and utter crap right now, so there is no reason not to.

    Murder Happens Interview with Julie
Julie: First of all, we would like to know a little bit about everyone. Could you give us a little insight about the members of Murder Happens?

Paul: Brian and Brenda Merry came to the band with a lot of material from their project Vela Uniform. Its influenced by bands like Portishead, Depeche Mode, and Baxter, but with a lot of organic aspects as well. We adapted some of their stuff to our live set. Mike C from The Bureau is our most recent addition. The Bureau is a great band, and they're making some changes and working on a new cd right now. Mike is working out great with MH. Phillip Lockett is playing bass right now, and is probably the best bass player I've ever had. And then of course there is me!

Julie: So Paul, you're the reason Murder Happens was started. When and how did that come about, and how did you come up with the name?

PW: Jim and I were in Murder Happens together before it was really my band. We weren't industrial or electronic at all. Jim wrote everything. We were a rock band, and it was great, but we only played a couple shows, so I kept the name when I made it my project, especially when Jim agreed to be a part of it. I don't remember how we thought of the name. I think my old friend Nick King thought it up.
But basically I recorded all the music to that first cd and let Jim do all the vocals, with some help from Todd Finoch from the St Louis band Not Waving But Drowning. They've been broken up for years now, and Todd never performed with us unfortunately. Jim only played a few shows before he was too busy with his work and family, or as I call it...SOLD OUT! Just kidding. I love Jim!
I could tell you some crazy stories about that guy.

Julie: Are the original band members still the current members today?

PW: God no! We have changed members quite a few times! The only original member is me as far as being from the first cd, but Brian has been our guitarist since our first show over 3 years ago.
My friend Joel (DJ Skeletal) calls us the Pigface of St Louis, because of all of our member changes. Someone else said that too at our last show. Our current lineup is as solid as its ever been.

Julie: Murder Happens has such a dynamic sound. How would you describe your music?

PW: I have had to describe it many times, and it's tough. Especially in St Louis, you get clumped into a goth/industrial genre for any stupid reason. But I would simply say our influences range from The Cure to Ministry. So you're right, it is a dynamic sound, and I like that about Murder Happens.

Julie: Who have been your biggest influences? (musically and non)

PW: Personally...Martin Atkins, Bill Rieflin, Jello Biafra (for not being afraid to do something different and sometimes crazy), Pigface, Ministry, The Cure, A Perfect Circle, a bunch of underground shit that it seems like everybody forgot about. Too many to name.

Julie: What's your own personal favorite song of your own?

PW: Man, I don't know. I like "Anchor" which will be on the new album, and "Sterile" which is an older one. Mike and Brenda both sing on "Sterile" and there is a lot of energy going on with that song.

Julie: A very reliable source has told me that Murder Happens will be tearing it up on tour soon...when will this tour be taking place? What cities are you planning on hitting up?

PW: Yeah, we're gonna hit the road with our good friends Apocalypse Theatre this spring. We'll go to Minneapolis, Detroit, Chicago, St Louis, KC, and I'd really like to go to Texas, but we will see if that happens this time around.

Julie: You guys have played quite a few shows...what has been your most memorable performance thus far, and why?

PW: Our show with VAST was pretty awesome. Having a band like that play in a little club like Creepy Crawl is just insane! Plus most members of Murder Happens consider VAST one of their favorite bands.
We're playing with them again in St Louis at Creepy Crawl in April.
It was also cool seeing En Esch from Slick Idiot getting down to us a few months back! He seemed to love us, and he gave me some great compliments. I believe he told me I "rocked out of control man!"
I was thinking, "dude, I have had posters of this guy on my walls since I was 13 years old! And he's talking about my band being good?"
He swapped me shirts, and recently told me he gets weird looks from people when he sports his Murder Happens shirt deep in the pulsing heart of Brooklyn. I bet he does!

Julie: What can your fans be expecting from you in the future? Is there a new album on the way? (please say yes!!!)

PW: Yeah, we're working on "Innocence can be Hell" right now. It's gonna be another full length album. We're also doing an Attrition cover for their tribute album. There is a good chance that En Esch from KMFDM and Slick Idiot will be teaming up with us on that one, but it isn't for sure yet.

Julie: For all of the technological people out there, what kind of equipment do you use for recording?

We record with Pro Tools when we go into the studio. Bryan Loss who did our first cd is working with us again.
We use Ableton Live for our live tracks and sequencing. We also use Stylus RMX for sounds and samples. We run a Apple Powerbook G4 on stage for that, with a MOTU 896HD. Its super solid!

Julie: This last show you guys put on (Dec. 10, 2006) you had a guest vocalist, Mike from The Bureau, can we be expecting any other appearances from him in the future, or anyone else, for that matter?

Yeah, he is in the band indefinitely. You could say he's an official member, which is great because he's always looking to improve and move forward.
Jim Hodge, who was on the first cd, is collaborating with me as well on 2 songs on the new cd. Basically, I liked some older material he had and wasn't doing anything with, and added to it, and we're gonna make that happen with Bryan.

Julie: Is there anything else at all that you'd like your fans to know?

Well, we don't have a lot booked right now, so be ready for new stuff, and definitely mark your calendars for the show with VAST in April!

Review on Murder Happens/High Blue Star/Attrition (Dec. 2006)
Hello my darlings! It's your girl, Julie, and I'm here to give you all a little taste of what went down this weekend. This past Sunday I attended the Murder Happens/High Blue Star/Attrition show at the Creepy Crawl in St. Louis. Let me tell you...the show was AMAZING!
Murder Happens was the first band to go up, and they rocked the house. Mike Cracchiolo, from The Bureau, teamed up with Brenda on vocals. It was the first time I have seen them perform live together, and they did a phenomenal job. Mixing Brenda's haunting, and melodically beautiful vocals, with the perfect touch from Mike's amazing sound made for and incredible match. However, they didn't do it alone. Paul, with his uncanny ability to impress the masses on drums, kept the beat alive, while Brian created musical mahem on guitar, along with Phillip tearing it up on bass.
One of the highlights of the night for me was when Brenda, ever so casually, reached out into the crowd and hijacked some girl's cigarette. She turned her back toward the crowd, and just stood there so intensly, puffing away while watching her fellow bandmates pump out a killer instrumental piece. It was such a classic rock star move by the lovely leading lady.
Each and every last person that attended the show really got a taste of greatness by Murder Happens on Sunday. They went out there, gave it their all, and rocked everyone's socks off! I know where I'm going to be next time Murder Happens hits up the stage...front and center, baby!
High Blue Sky and Attrition also put on a one of a kind show for everyone. One hot chick with amazing ambient vocals, along with genius music from two bands=one hell of a night! Laurie, the female vocalist for both HBS and Attrition, really kept the crowd alive with her intensity, and expression. She's also a very talented violinist, as well...she busted that violin out and sang simultaneously, and showed everyone what she was made of. I was truly impressed by both sets.
If you missed any of these bands on Sunday, you really missed out. The drinks were stiff, the music was amazing, and both DJ's (dj.ste.mairet and 486) had awesome sets. Be sure to catch any of these band's live shows in the future...it's guaranteed you'll have a spectacular time!

    THE LAND OF THE DEAD
I was very excited to finally see they had released "The Land Of The Dead" by George A Romero. The 4th installation to his dead series!

Asia Argenta(Dario Argenta's daughter) was in the film to my suprise. As well as a cameo by Tom Savini as a zombie! That was incredible! He did special effects for the first films, & yet he is a zombie in this one. His school does the effects now!

I loved the film. Lot's of carnage & gore. It doesn't have the typical doomsday felling as his other films, but it was done really well. You like the characters & got to see how people live with the after effect of zombies. & they didn't act so fake as most movies would. The rich seperated the people & the rich were protected in a tower & lived there. While the poor were on the streets working for them. So once again like real life...the poor is treated like shit!

The dialogue & plot was great! & I jumped a few times in my seat. Alot of suprsie attacks in this one. & very creative kills. & I love the fact that the zombies grew smart. The main zombie was the leader, he taught the others how to use weapons against the humans. & the zombie count was incredible. Their were scenes of total carnage & chaos that I did not expect. I was expecting something like the remake...but I got something way better than that. I was not so pleased in the remake. It was ok...but not really scary. In the original dawn of the dead...zombies were everywhere & it was scarier that way. No they didn't run...but imagine having to swirve around millions of zombies who want to eat you. There was no zombie baby or any of that crap either. The story was way darker & better.

So I didn't know what to expect of this one. Not since most horror films have been turned into action films. But George kept real to his series. It is different. But he delivers it well. There was no real happy ending, but it didn't have the regualar end of the world, no hope ending either. It almost feels as if the series will continue?

I would give this a 10 out of 10 stars!

    ~ge
